Choosing a course

Every course is listed on the course register. The questions here help you narrow the list before you read the detail pages.

I've never tattooed before. Where should I start?

The Beginner Fine Line Tattoo Course is built for people new to fine line tattooing. If you’d like a broader grounding first, compare it with the main Fine Line Tattoo Course.

I already tattoo. Is there something beyond the basics?

The Advanced Fine Line Tattoo Course is for refining skills you already have. You can also work on one area at a time with Line Work Training or Needle & Technique Training.

Can I focus on design or equipment on its own?

Yes. Fine Line Tattoo Design covers composition and drawing for fine line work, and Tattoo Machine Training covers setting up, handling and understanding machines. For a wider checklist, read How to Choose a Tattoo Course.

B · BEFORE TRAINING

Preparing for training

Do I need to be good at drawing?

You don’t need to be a finished illustrator, but regular drawing helps. Fine line work relies on steady, confident strokes, so filling a sketchbook with simple shapes, script and botanical outlines before you start is time well spent.

Is there anything worth reading first?

Start with What Fine Line Tattoo Training Involves and Fine Line Tattoo Techniques Explained. They’ll give you the vocabulary you’ll hear from day one.

What to bring

What should I have with me?

As a general guide, people often find these useful. The exact requirements for your course are confirmed after you enquire.

A sketchbook, pencils and fine liners

Reference designs you’d like to work towards

Comfortable clothing you can move in, and practical shoes

Something to tie back long hair, if that suits you

Is equipment provided?

What’s supplied depends on the course. Ask when you enquire and we’ll confirm what’s included, so you don’t buy equipment you won’t need.

C

Hygiene expectations

How seriously is hygiene treated in training?

As a core skill, not a footnote. Tattooing breaks the skin, so barrier protection, workstation setup, avoiding cross-contamination and sharps disposal come before speed or style. Tattoo Hygiene & Safety Training goes into this in depth.

Do the rules differ across Australia?

Tattooing and skin penetration requirements are set by each state, territory and local council, so check with the authority where you plan to work. Tattoo Hygiene & Safety Basics is a good primer.

Enquiries and enrolment

Where do I find dates, costs and inclusions?

These details are specific to each course, so the most reliable way to get them is to send an enquiry naming the course you’re interested in.

I'm not sure which course suits me. Can I still enquire?

Yes. Tell us where you’re starting from and what you want to work on, and we’ll point you to the right fit. You can also look at Student Work and read about our trainers first.
